News

We send a bi-annual newsletter to friends and aquaintances of the Hughes Sport Foundation.

See below for some of the highlights of what we’ve all been up to!

The 4th Hughes Sport Foundation Aquathon was held on June 16th 2013 at St. Pirans School, Maidenhead and was, again, a hugely supported event and a great successful, both from a fundraising point of view and seeing so many people compete out of their “comfort” zone! The start list totalled 61 competitors – 7 relays, 11 adults and 43 children; again showing a fantastic effort from the youth category. A particular mention must go to the Under 10 girls who were the most competitive category! Well done to all who completed the event and set/beat personal best times. See events page for results.

Our thanks, as always, goes to those people who helped us run the  event- Rachel Smith, Nicky & John Martin, Pat & Brian Jones, Penny, Steve & Kat McEwen, Kathleen & Danny Smith, Gillian Kinnear, Caroline Parker, Neale Jenvey, Tara & Paul Isherwood.

Successful Launch Fundraising

Following our Launch in 2008, the Foundation has raised over £10,000 thanks to lots of generous donations fund raising efforts, some of the main ones listed below:

  • Monmouth Triathlon Club Monmouth School Sports Club hosted the David Hughes Memorial Aquathon. A 400M swim followed by a 5k run for the seniors and shorter distance for the Juniors, saw c100 entrants complete the course and raise our first money for the Foundation. Thank you to all our friends who competed in this event, good (amusing) memories!
  • Since 2008 UK Steel Enterprise have dedicated the charity raffle at their Annual golf day at The Rolls of Monmouth to the Foundation. Our thanks go to Regional Director Andrew Morris, for his support.
  • GE Capital Leveraged Finance European Team was selected by the main GE Capital Board for their performance in 2012, to receive the charitable donation award of $5,000. Members of the team were asked to nominate suitable charities that could benefit from this and The Hughes Sport Foundation was chosen as the beneficiary.
  • One of the Director’s of the Trust, Ben Martin undertook the gruelling UK Ironman and raised sponsorship for the Foundation. A 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike finishing off with a marathon in 11hours 49mins makes him an Ironman
  • Gemma Stonelake, on the back of completing the Aquathon event, entered and completed the Bath Half marathon having never run 5k before the Aquathon – she raised excellent sponsorship in the process
  • Katherine & Michael McEwen battled it out over the Suicide Six Cross country race, with Katherine taking the honours whilst raising money for HSF. Katherine competed in the “Tough Guy” event for the HSF too. Special thanks also to Katherine for designing our logo
  • Steven Parry completed the hardcore ‘Tough Guy’ event – in sub zero temperatures put himself through icy lakes, slippery hills and fire in honour of HSF
  • Our website was launched just before Christmas 2008, made possible through donations from Lyndon and Liz and Matthew and Catherine Edwards, and a much appreciated effort from Donal and Rachel Smith for designing and building the whole thing! And more recently to Brendan Smith for the up keep of the website admin.
